Not to be missed

The Pope's Room

Among the most anticipated rooms of the visit, the room of Pope John Paul II is one of the castle's main attractions.

In November 1995, in this room, Pope John Paul II rested, in Palermo for the Third Convention of the Churches of Italy. The room has been preserved as it was and can be admired today through a large glass window. Next to it, a small museum holds the photographs donated by the Vatican and the video of that visit.

A little history

A castle built to look far

Castello Utveggio stands on Monte Pellegrino, a few kilometres from the centre of Palermo. It was built in the 1930s as a grand hotel and over time has had many lives: today it is a place of culture and training open to the public.

The complex sits on the mountain that Goethe called “the most beautiful promontory in the world”.
